6th Avenue Morningside Orpheum Theater- Built in 1927 originally as a 4-story building, the Orpheum Electric Building was home to Sioux City Gas & Electric.  Chicago designers Rapp & Rapp, creative minds behind dozens of Orpheum circuit theaters in the U.S., encased their theater with the commercial space.  Originally a 4-story building, another 4 floors were added in 1949.   The theater was mainly intended for vaudeville and stage acts but in the late 30’s, went mainly to films and symphony performances.

Del and I went to movies here in the 50's.

Leisure World

Our Home in our Golden Years

A Little History of this Community in which we are blessed to live during our Senior Years.

Leisure World Community in Arizona started after successful communities were developed by Rossmoor  in California. Judy's Grandparents' (Benjamin and Maude Rice Haag) were earlier residents of Leisure World in Seal Beach, California.  It was known as Rossmoor World of Leisure. Grandma Maude is seen leading the parade with her 3 wheel bicycle in 1958.

April 1973 was the beginning of new construction. It took place on Leisure World Boulevard just off Power Road entrance where a large globe was placed at the entrance just before the gate house.

People began to order their home by selecting one of several models which they toured just inside the entrance. As I recall hearing, the Highlights in amenities were a golf course, security (A Big Selling Point), and Nurses always on call (Another Great Selling Point for those moving from the Midwest, especially). Bingo was a Friday night possibility, and it was Free.  Extra cards could be purchased for 10˘.

A lot could be purchased on the Boulevard, a lake or the gold course. The first group of homes built were 140 in number. Built on a Sweet potato farm those first residents remembered receiving free sweet potatoes and their homes were referred to as
 "Leisure World Gold".

My parents purchased their groceries at Bayless Supermarket on the corner of Main and Power Road. They were so excited when Fry's Grocery came to the area just north of the Broadway gate on Main Street. They talked of the day when Golf carts could be driven to get groceries when they might no longer drive.
We drove down the Apache Trail to Bates' Nut Farm, Scottsdale and Tri-city Mall in Mesa for other shopping.  Orange groves were surrounding the area and fruit stands graced the orchards. Our children picked a few of their own citrus to take home to the Iowa
. They picked outside the gates/citrus was not plentiful inside as the community was so new.)
