Cruising Around Hawaii on The South Pacific

March 2003
Map of Cruise

Listening to Benny Goodman and other popular oldies and watching Others enjoy dancing was fun.
The chocolate Buffet was almost sinful. Chocolate everywhere and so many different combinations.

Beaches and Lighthouse at Nawiliwili, Kaua'i are great remembrances. Scenery is awesome. Flowers and Mountains, beaches, resorts.

We made Leis several days with June
Hula Dancers brought the customs of Hawaii to the ship

Now 2007, we still talk of that cruise and Del has added personal comments below as Judy tries to show some of it in pictures.

"Every opportunity I had I watched the Greatest Show on Earth. It was the most awesome show as The full moon rose over the ocean."  Del

"Every day I watched my favorite show on this ship. It was the full moon rising upon the ocean. The path of light laid out in front of me and led to that heavenly body so far away and yet so close to me." Del

Fanning Island we met people who have lived here for centuries. 2 other islands are 10 miles long and 1 mile wide.
There is no running water or electricity. Dirt roads. Thatched roof huts with no flooring.
A ship from Australia supplies them twice a year.

They have opportunity to sell to tourists from Cruise Ships which have come once a week in the past couple years. The Norwegian Cruise Line found them and has helped them to build A school. The school is a canopy on poles covering them from the sun and a few tables.

Fanning Island is an island around 1,000 miles South of Hawaii. It is part of the Kiribati Republic. It is located on a circular ring of coral that is above the water. Coral is the shell of a living organism. In the center is a shallow lagoon or pool. The water outside the island is very deep. Where the Norwegian Star stood the water was around 3,000 feet deep. Below is the main inlet to the lagoon called "English Harbor". Some ships can go into the harbor. Our ship was too big. In the distance you can see the back side of the island.

We came in to the island by tender.  We were welcomed by a group of natives singing.
The island was very beautiful as we walked around.

The children were delightful.
The official language is English. They teach English in the school but Most don't speak it well. We visited the elementary school on the island. The school is called the NCL Primary School.

It is named in honor of the cruise line NCL. They have donated many supplies to the school. It has a separate building for each grade. There is no glass in the windows.

Natives climbing the coconut palms pick coconuts. This is a part of the diet of the natives. They also fish and eat other fruit grown on the island.
A lady making a hat which Betty purchased and wore.

Homes were simple open platforms with a thatched roof.

Dancers from the school went to the ship to entertain the passengers before leaving the island. We left rapidly as a wind came up and hurried everyone back to the Ship waiting out in the ocean.

Now for our journey back to Hawaii!
